BEST $5 LUNCH CONTEST
Finalist 5: YC's
Mongolian BBQ
Get Out's
Best $5 Lunch Contest keeps steaming along. The latest of our 10 "finalist"
restaurants - YC's Mongolian Barbecue, 3206 S. McClintock Drive, Tempe
- has received the highest score so far: 92 out of a possible 99 points.
The restaurant chain also has another location in the valley.
CINDY
- First impression: "It doesn't
get any better than this. I liked it so much our family made a return
visit for dinners." Order: "Build to suit is what YC's
is all about. The bowl is ready to be filled to your liking with meat,
noodles, and vegetables. Recipes for sauce combinations are on display."
Atmosphere: Cool and clean inside and the staff were friendly in
asking us if everything was to our liking." Advice: "I planted oodles
of fresh noodles on top of my bowl."
MARK
- First impression: YC's
is
easy to locate in a shopping center with ample parking all around.
When my wife and I entered, we were greeted by Matthew, an extremely friendly
and helpful employee."
Order: "YC's
works on the assumption that everything one can fit into a bowl can work
and taste great, and they were right in my case. I loaded up on meats,
tofu and noodles." Atmosphere:
"The
dining area is somewhat spartan but light and airy due to the abundance
of windows. The staff is friendly and funny." Advice:
"I'll
quote Matthew, who said, 'Don't be shy. We expect to see your feet in
the air as you try to stuff ingredients into the bowl.'"

MONIQUE
- First impression: "It seems like a challenge to put as much food
as possible into your bowl. Making the stir-fry was nearly as fun as
eating it." Order: "I had YC's special teriyaki sauce with long
slices of beef, pork, chicken and turkey with lettuce leaves, carrots,
broccoli, sprouts, noodles, pineapple and I'm sure there was more I'm
leaving out. My husband had the sweet-and-sour sauce. Both were very
good." Atmosphere: "Components were overflowing onto trays, which
isn't unusual at YC's, where you're encouraged to pack as much food
as possible into your bowl. I noticed that regular customers all had
their sauces to a science." Service: "The
food was an incredible value, since my husband and I were able to make
two meals apiece out of our orders. The food was delicious, but it almost
has to be, since you create your
own." Advice: "Between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., the wait
can be long. The hours between 2 and 5 p.m. are usually better."
Congratulations to Marianne Creed of Ahwatukee, one of two people
who nominated YC's Mongolian Barbecue. Marianne receives a Get Out Dining
Club Card, which gets here more than $350 in free meals at Valley restaurants.
